Otome is a genre. I can understand the confusion given the literal translation and the western interpretation of ‘otome’ and how it influences OELVN, but it is a genre that is meant to describe romantic relationships between a female protagonist and male suitors, and has never been anything but in Japanese media.
Recently there have been maybe a token Yuri or friendship route, but it’s still featuring a female protagonist, and these routes are typically referred to as ‘yuri’ rather than Otome.EDIT: I feel like I should make an addendum to explain myself re: the OELVN community. Given that the ’otome’ scene in the OELVN community has popular roots in fluidity of sexuality, gender, and poly relationships, it’s confusing - but not incorrect - to say that Otome in this context refers purely to the target audience. But for Japanese consumers and, I’d assume, the VN fan base overall, people are far more interested in tags and titles that are explicitly indicative of the type of experience they’ll get in the game: bishoujo, yaoi, yuri, nukige, ecchi, kinetic, bara, etc.

These titles are meant to refer to a specific audience each, and that is consumers of those specific pairings and themes. In the goal of correctiveness to the perceived translation of the genre, the meaning of these specific themes in VNs get lost.I don’t think this is necessarily an issue nor a matter of political correctness either, but rather that VNs are very unique to most media because of the specificity in the stories they tell, and that the medium skews towards fulfilling niches rather than serving a broader audience.Anyway thanks for coming to my ted talk.
